About the school
Gayathri Higher Primary School has been part of the Gayathripuram community in Mysore for over 40 years.
Founded by Aijaz Ahmed
Mr. Aijaz Ahmed established Gayathri Higher Primary School in 1983. The son of a military soldier, he began teaching the children of military personnel while he was still a student.
When children in Gayathripuram needed better access to education, he started a school in a small rented building using his own savings. He gradually expanded it, working through financial difficulties and employing teachers from disadvantaged backgrounds.
His community work also brought local young people together through the Rama Yuvaka Sanga, which helped secure land for a local temple.
A school for Gayathripuram
The school is named after Gayathri Devi, daughter of the late Maharaja of Mysore, in recognition of the neighbourhood’s namesake.
It continues to serve the children of Gayathripuram, with recognition from the Government of Karnataka and classes up to 8th standard.
Learning beyond the classroom
Alongside academics, the school gives children space to explore their interests through extracurricular activities.
The library, spacious playground and regular cultural events support reading, creativity, teamwork and personal growth. Respect, responsibility and participation in the community are part of school life.
